Tis the Season!

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14

It's December. We all know what that means, focusing on one day, Christmas. Where we have family over to houses, open presents delivered by a moderately obese man we call Santa, and then sit down and have a dinner and (this year) watch basketball and some football.

But have we, as Americans, forgotten what the season is all about...or should I say Who. This Season is about one man. Jesus.
Even though there is no historical evidence to actually prove that Jesus was born on December 25th, it's a nice ability to have a date devoted to the birth of our savior, to the man who gave his life for us.

We allowed this company called Hallmark to make it all about the presents and about the family time. Which..don't get me wrong, it's nice to spend time with my family and get presents consisting of things that I wouldn't normally get myself. But we shouldn't allow this to outweigh what the season is all about.
It's about the birth of something amazing. The birth of a new era in humanity. It's about God showing his love for us so much that he had his Son born so that he could die for US.

This season is also about giving. Taking that extra second out of your day to help someone who is worse off than yourself.
I remember watching a movie, many years ago, called "pay it forward." Now the ending of the movie was enough to make almost anyone, but me, cry, but the message was the best part.
If all of us just do one nice thing a day, then maybe it will make the world a better place. We just have to remember that if we do something good, don't expect a reward, just ask that they pay it forward and do something nice for someone else.
That my friends is what this season is about. Being more Godly and more like a Christian than ever.

So maybe Hallmark was onto something after all.

Take the time to be nice to that person who annoys you at work. Or maybe tip your waitress a little extra. It's the time to really remember that it's the thought that counts.

But please, just don't lose the fact that this season is about God's love for us. Spread the love of God by being more like his Son.
I think that's the best way to thank God for everything he has given us.
